Let's Celebrate the Magnificent Oruro's Caranival 2012!

This month Viento Sur will dedicate every sunday to the majestic bolivian carnival that will take Saturday February 18 and Sunday 19, 2012. We will be talking about the bolivian folkloric Oruro's Carnival. The bolivian carnival of Oruro, is the result of the cultural interrelation between the Urus, Spanish and Africans. They cohabited this geography and contributed to the culture with rites, customs, myths, legends, beliefs and devotion to the Virgen of the Socavon. This Carnival that is more than 2000 years old was recognized in May 2001 and was declared by the Unesco to be a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Patrimony of the Humanity.

K'ALAMARKA IS COMING TO TORONTO!

Viento Sur will feature music from K'ALAMARKA, the months of June and July, and guess what, they are finally coming to Toronto, from BOLIVIA the MECCA of andean music and latino american music.

Viento Sur Featured Great Bolivian Band SUKAY

SUKAY is directed by the legendary Bolivian composer and one of the greatest master exponents of the charango: Eddy Navia. He was a founding member of the famous group Savia Andina with whom he recorded 30 albums, three of which went gold. Savia Andina was a major force in bringing Andean Folk Music into the mainstream, even hitting the Top 40 charts in South America. Eddy Navia has also recorded eight solo albums.

SUKAY was founded in 1975, by Quentin Howard (Executive Director, pan-pipes, flutes, and lead vocals), who in describing her first experience in hearing the zamponas or pan-pipes, being played says, "That sound went right to the heart of me." It is Howard’s true sense of intimacy with the music she plays that has made her such a natural on stage and has allowed her to connect with, educate and inspire audiences for the last 20 years.

The music of SUKAY has its roots in a 5000 year old, pre-Inca culture that believes in a strong relationship between life and nature that can be heard in the sound of the instruments. Though the group still performs the traditional compositions of the Andes, SUKAY continues to look toward ways to break new ground.

Sukay World Music is a woman, husband, son owned family label. Gabriel Navia, who composed the first song on the Encuentros CD when he was twelve, has been a major source of inspiration in the making of Pachamama. The label has received many honors for its 12 recordings including two Indies World International Music.

In 1978 he was part of Khanate, after that he played with Emma Junaro, Jose, Joselo and Marcelo, Los Jairas, William Ernesto Centellas, Jacha Marka, Savia Nueva and the famous Los Ruphay.
In 1990 he published his first compositions. In 2001 he completed his studies of Antropology.

Viento Sur, will dedicate this month of March to one of the greatest bolivian bands, Los Awatiñas. They were founded in 1970, and they maintain the roots of their native forefathers. Their goal is to educate young people in conserving their native dignity and culture for the children of the future of Bolivia.
One of the important thing to mention about this band is that they destine part of their concert gains to education and health projects in their native Bolivia, they have been helping the Red Cross of France to build schools and help the children of their native country Bolivia.
In the summer they perform at different musical fetival in France, Belgium, Germany and in other countries in Europe. They go back to La Paz on winter to compose and write new songs.

Bolivian Alasita 2010!

This afternoon in Viento Sur we have dedicated the show to the Bolivian festival Alasita (“buy me” in the indigenous Aymara language) to pay homage to Ekeko, the squat mustached Bolivian Aymaran god of abundance. The Ekeko is a colorful statue load down with tiny items representing prosperity, abundance and good luck. This is an annual festival when Bolivians like to buy trinkets representing their wishes for the new year in the hope Ekeko will make them come true.
The festival of Alasita combines local Aymara traditions and Roman Catholic beliefs that have being celebrated in Bolivia every January 24 since 1781. In keeping with its traditional roots, a shaman often blesses the trinkets with incense, flower petals and rubbing alcohol. Many participants also climb the stairs to the Roman Catholic cathedral for the blessing of Our Lady of La Paz.

Bolivia MantaCarlos and Julio Arguedas founded Bolivia Manta to help preserve and promote the traditions of the indigenous communities of the the bolivian Andes. "When the Spaniards arrived," notes the group, "thousands of men were uprooted from their communities and condemned to work in the towns and mining centers. Exploited, despised, they continued to play and the music endured through time, getting richer from the influences that mixed in with it." As is often the case with groups that strive to promote Native culture, they have experienced political and economic difficulties in their home country that forced them to live in exile in Europe. "Forced to give up part of ourselves, we leave in increasing numbers, pushed on by need and the hope of leading a less miserable life. When our exile and our loneliness are at their deepest, the music is there like a call that revives within us a world full of excitement and deep feelings."

On Sunday November 16, 2008 Viento Sur featured music of one of the greatest bolivian SIKU (pan-flute) players of the world, Carlos Ponce. We have also interviewed him live from La Paz-Bolivia.

Carlos Ponce was born in La Paz-Bolivia. At a very young age he showed passion for music and started to play the "siku" (Aymara language for pan-flute). By the age of 14 he was already recording with very well known bolivian bands an musicians. He is the pioneer of bolivian jazz, his skill in the execution of the bolivian sikus (bolivian-pan-flutes) has allowed him to participate in many Jazz festivals around the world.

Viento Sur featured another amazing bolivian band Kallawaya that is the most exciting group to appear on the Bolivian Andean music scene – local and international – for over a decade.
The new ensemble has a formidable virtuosi line-up and offers a wide-ranging programme of Bolivian and Latin American music to display its myriad talent. Using the traditional bolivian combination of wind, string and percussion instruments, Kallawaya aim for artistic excellence and diversity in performance. Moving from a brief but stunning presentation of auctoctonous bolivian music, their concert performances encompass traditional and popular styles, introducing elements of latin boliivian jazz to create an impressively contemporary sound.
In 2003 Kallawaya made their debut tour in the West. For this proyect five of Bolivia's most talented musicians, all stars of the La Paz music world, have been brought together by bolivian kenista Adrian Villanueva.

Adrian Villanueva – kenas
Kenista with Rumillajta for fifteen years, and a well known flute craftsman, Adrian took the lead acting part portraying a kallawaya, or travelling healer,
in Amazon, an imax film released in 1997.
Max Carlos Ponce– zamponas
A highly accomplished panpipe player who has performed with many major Bolivian artists including Rumillajta, with whom he toured and recorded. Reknowned for his remarkable technique on chromatic panpipe and his skill as a jazz musician.
Edgar Villaroel – lead vocalist, percussion
A charismatic performer with a highly distinctive voice and a model for many Andean vocalists. Has sung with leading Bolivian groups K’jarkas, Mallku de los Andes and Rumillajta. During the nineties lived in London and sang with Robert Pla and his Latin Jazz Ensemble.
Juan Carlos Cordero – guitar
Guitarist and song-arranger with Rumillajta for twelve years. A remarkably versatile, classically trained guitarist. Winner of the 1994 Guitar Festival, Bolivia.
Saul Callejas – charangos, second voice
One of the finest charango players Bolivia has produced and
Jach'a Mallku's ex-charangista. A top prize winner at Bolivia's
Festival of Musica Popular 1988.

Tribute to Orlando Rojas

After an intense fundraising campain Viento Sur was able to get 16 pledges. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Today we paid tribute to the life of a great bolivian singer-song writter, Orlando Rojas who past away on November 3rd. Orlando Rojas had written more than 400 songs, of which more than 200 were great hits across Latin America. He was also the president of the bolivian society of authors and composers.

Hello everybody, today's show was excellent. I want to thank all of you that called me during the show. This has been an amazing second part of our special featuring the music of bolivian singer-song writer Jaime Junaro. During the special we listened to a recording that Jaime had done along with his sister, Emma Junaro, and brother, Cesar Junaro, both noted singer-song writers. The album is titled "Tu Semilla" (Your Seed), and is dedicated to their father Emiliano Junaro, who was the inspiration for their sucessful musical carreers.

Jaime, Cesar, and the legendary troubador Carlos Lopez were former members of the famous bolivian trio, SAVIA NUEVA, leaders of the political song writing style "La Nueva Cancion". They have inspired generations of bolivians and other Latin Americans alike to question their government and call for action against injustice.
